Mau, India – March 10, 2025: Five inmates at the Mau district jail have tested positive for HIV during a routine health check-up, prison authorities reported on Saturday. The newly identified cases were confirmed within the past week, as stated by Jailor Rajesh Kumar to PTI Bhasha.
These recent detections add to the nine previously known cases within the facility, bringing the total number of HIV-positive inmates to fourteen. In response, the prison administration is ramping up testing efforts to identify any additional infections and provide timely medical intervention.
District Jail Pharmacist Ajay Kumar Srivastava pointed to a potential source of transmission, revealing that several of the infected individuals had recently received tattoos at the Dadri fair in Ballia. Authorities suspect that contaminated needles may have been a contributing factor.
Health officials are now working closely with prison authorities to ensure adequate medical care for affected inmates while also conducting awareness programs about safe practices, including hygiene and the risks associated with unregulated tattooing.
The incident has prompted local health departments to investigate hygiene standards at public fairs and tattooing centers, aiming to prevent further cases of infection.
Disclaimer: This report is based on official statements and preliminary investigations. Further assessments by health authorities are ongoing, and conclusions regarding the exact source of transmission are yet to be determined.
