In an unprecedented show of unity, over 1,000 doctors, public health experts, and medical students have come together to support the ‘Nasha Mukti Indradhanush Abhiyan India’ initiative, advocating for a tobacco-free future. This campaign, launched by the Asian Coalition for Health Empowerment (ACHE) in partnership with Doctors Against Addiction (DaAD), aims to collect signatures from medical professionals and the public to promote healthier, addiction-free lifestyles across India.

Over the past eight months, the campaign has gained significant traction, drawing enthusiastic responses from the medical community and beyond. Dr. Narender Saini, Former General Secretary of the Indian Medical Association, reported that the compiled signatures will be presented to health organizations and policymakers, including the Prime Minister’s Office, to push for stringent tobacco cessation measures.

Dr. Saini emphasized that this initiative is more than just a campaign; it’s a movement towards a healthier future. The strategy incorporates a holistic approach to combat tobacco addiction and advocates for stricter regulations against other harmful substances. He highlighted the critical role of healthcare professionals and the community in raising awareness and dispelling myths about tobacco use, which is essential for achieving a healthier society.

The campaign’s focus extends beyond tobacco, addressing addictions such as drugs, alcohol, and smartphone overuse. This aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal-3 (SDG-3), which aims to ensure healthy lives and well-being for all ages.

Dr. Pawan Gupta, Senior Consultant of Pulmonary Medicine at BLK-MAX Super Speciality Hospital in Delhi, praised the campaign’s comprehensive approach. By integrating global best practices with local insights, the initiative creates a robust framework to tackle addiction. He noted that uniting healthcare professionals and concerned citizens is key to fostering significant changes in health policies and practices.

Dr. Sunaina Soni, Assistant Professor at the Department of Physiology at Subharti Medical College in Meerut, echoed the sentiment of overwhelming support from the medical community. She believes the collected signatures will drive substantial policy changes, making a tangible impact in the fight against addiction. Dr. Soni added that the campaign is not just about gathering signatures but also about inspiring hope and accountability, empowering individuals and communities to strive for a tobacco-free future.

The ‘Nasha Mukti Indradhanush Abhiyan’ represents a historic push towards a healthier India, with medical professionals leading the charge for a tobacco-free society. The campaign’s success underscores the collective effort needed to combat addiction and promote well-being, marking a significant step towards achieving a healthier nation.
