SHIMLA – The Himachal Pradesh government has announced a significant restructuring of its health cadres, splitting the existing Directorate of Health Services into two separate entities: the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) and the Directorate of Health Services (DHS). This strategic move aims to streamline operations and enhance the delivery of healthcare services across the state.

A health department spokesperson revealed that the decision was made following a comprehensive review of the healthcare system, with the goal of improving efficiency and addressing existing staff shortages. Employees were given the option to choose their preferred directorate, resulting in a clear division of personnel. Approximately 74.44% of the workforce opted to join the DHS, focusing on general healthcare services, while 5,002 employees chose the DME, dedicated to medical education and related activities.

“This bifurcation will allow each directorate to focus on its specific mandate, leading to more targeted and effective service delivery,” stated the spokesperson. The government has also announced plans to conduct separate recruitment drives for each directorate to fill existing vacancies and ensure adequate staffing levels.

The restructuring is part of a broader initiative led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to upgrade the state’s healthcare infrastructure. Over the past two years, the government has implemented several measures to improve healthcare facilities, including plans to replace outdated medical equipment with advanced technology. This commitment underscores the government’s dedication to providing accessible and high-quality medical care to the residents of Himachal Pradesh.

This move is expected to improve the efficiency of the healthcare system, allowing for better management and delivery of services.
