In a decisive effort to address the critical shortage of medical specialists, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced a substantial increase in monthly stipends for senior residents and super specialists. This bold move aims to fill the staggering 376 vacant specialist doctor positions out of 751 sanctioned posts in the state’s medical colleges, a gap that has been hampering healthcare delivery across the region.

Significant Hike in Stipends

The new stipend structure represents an increase ranging from 50 to 170 percent. Senior residents and tutor specialists, who previously received Rs 60,000 to Rs 65,000, will now be paid Rs 1 lakh per month. Super specialists will see their stipends rise to Rs 1.30 lakh, up from Rs 60,000 to Rs 65,000. This enhanced remuneration package is designed to make government medical service more attractive to qualified specialists, encouraging them to serve in the state’s healthcare institutions.

Addressing Healthcare Challenges

Himachal Pradesh has been grappling with a shortage of medical specialists, which has led to a significant number of patients seeking treatment outside the state. According to health department data, approximately 9.5 lakh patients leave Himachal Pradesh annually for medical care elsewhere. This exodus results in a financial loss estimated at Rs 1,350 crore to the state’s GDP.

Officials believe that by improving the availability and quality of healthcare within the state, Himachal Pradesh could save around Rs 550 crore annually. More importantly, enhanced local healthcare services would ensure better patient outcomes and reduce the burden on families forced to travel long distances for treatment.

Government’s Vision for Healthcare Improvement

The stipend hike is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure by attracting and retaining talented medical professionals. By making government service financially competitive, the state hopes to bridge the gap in specialist availability and improve access to quality healthcare for its residents.

This initiative is expected to have a positive ripple effect on the overall health ecosystem in Himachal Pradesh, fostering a more robust, accessible, and patient-centric healthcare system.
