Kakinada, April 6 – A public health scare has gripped Pallam village in the Katrenikona mandal of Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema district after a significant number of residents tested positive for Hepatitis B and C. Health authorities have initiated emergency measures in response to the outbreak.

The village, home to approximately 15,000 people, raised alarms after diagnostic labs in Kakinada, Amalapuram, and surrounding areas reported an unusual increase in Hepatitis cases. This prompted the district administration to launch a comprehensive mass screening drive.

According to Konaseema district officials, rapid blood tests were administered to 2,200 of the village’s estimated 6,000+ adult residents over the past week. The initial results revealed that 205 individuals tested positive for either Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C. These individuals have been directed to the district hospital in Amalapuram for confirmatory ELISA tests and to begin necessary treatment protocols.

District Collector Mahesh Kumar addressed the situation, stating, “The administration is on high alert and is taking all necessary steps to contain the virus. The health of the people is our top priority. We are monitoring the situation closely.”

Medical experts have highlighted the urgency of the situation and the need for swift preventive actions. They noted that while a vaccine is available for Hepatitis B, there is currently no vaccine for Hepatitis C. Both viral infections pose serious health risks if not managed, potentially leading to severe liver damage or liver failure. Doctors emphasized the importance of early detection through testing and regular health monitoring to prevent long-term complications.

However, health teams conducting the screening drive are reportedly facing challenges, with some villagers expressing reluctance to undergo testing. Authorities are urging the public in Pallam to cooperate fully with the medical teams for their own safety and the well-being of their families and the community.

Mass screening efforts will continue throughout Pallam village to facilitate early intervention and curb the further spread of the viruses.
