The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting a significant heat wave that will affect most states across the country in June. According to the IMD, above-normal maximum temperatures are expected in June, with the exception of the southern peninsular region, where temperatures are likely to remain normal to below normal.
The IMD’s forecast indicates that northwest India and adjoining areas of central India will experience a higher number of heat wave days. Additionally, the department predicts that minimum temperatures will also be above normal across most regions, except for parts of extreme northern northwest India and a few areas in the east and northeast, where normal to below-normal minimum temperatures are anticipated.
“Above-normal monthly maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country in June, except many parts of the southern peninsular India, where normal to below-normal temperatures are most likely,” the IMD stated.
The forecast highlights the potential health risks associated with the heat wave, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Heat waves can lead to heat-related illnesses, dehydration, and stress on infrastructure.
In response to the forecast, authorities are urged to take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the heat wave. This includes opening cooling centers, issuing public advisories, and implementing strategies to reduce urban heat islands. These actions are vital to protect public health during periods of extreme heat.
The IMD advises individuals to stay hydrated, remain in cool environments, and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours to stay safe. As the country braces for the impending heat wave, awareness and preparedness will be key in managing the challenges posed by the rising temperatures.
Key Precautions During Heat Waves:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
- Seek Cool Environments: Spend time in air-conditioned or shaded areas to avoid heat exposure.
- Limit Strenuous Activities: Avoid engaging in heavy physical activities during peak heat hours, typically between 10 AM and 4 PM.
- Monitor Vulnerable Individuals: Pay special attention to the elderly, young children, and those with existing health conditions.
By taking these precautions, individuals can reduce the risks associated with heat waves and ensure their well-being during the extreme weather conditions predicted for June.
