New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized on Saturday that achieving the goal of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) is fundamentally linked to the health and well-being of its citizens. Speaking at a World Liver Day event organized by the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), Shah stressed that a developed nation cannot be realised with an unwell population.

“The concept of a Viksit Bharat cannot be realised by being unwell and that is why it is very important that every citizen remains healthy,” stated the Home Minister. He urged all citizens to adopt healthy habits, including a balanced diet, adequate water intake, sufficient sleep, and regular exercise. Shah added that while individuals should take responsibility for these aspects, the government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, “will take the responsibility of taking care of your health.”

Sharing insights from his own life, Shah mentioned experiencing significant positive changes since adopting a healthier lifestyle in May 2020. He encouraged young people, in particular, to recognise the potential they can unlock by focusing on proper hydration, diet, exercise, and sleep tailored to their body’s needs.

On the occasion of World Liver Day, the Home Minister called upon everyone to pledge towards maintaining liver health through awareness, diligence, and complete information.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to healthcare, Shah pointed towards several initiatives:

  • Preventive Healthcare: The Ministry of AYUSH is actively working on systems to prevent illness, with AYUSH wings increasingly being integrated even into large allopathic hospitals. He noted that the concept of holistic health, encompassing mental and physical well-being, was central to the idea of World Yoga Day.
  • Financial Support: The government is covering treatment costs up to ₹5 lakh for crores of citizens, including bearing all expenses up to the same amount for individuals over 70 years of age.
  • Infrastructure Development: An investment of ₹65,000 crore has been made to bolster the country’s health infrastructure, aiming to make every Primary Health Center (PHC) and Community Health Center (CHC) a complete healthcare unit.
  • Affordable Medicines: A network of over 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras has been established, providing generic medicines at discounts of up to 80%.
  • Vaccination: ‘Mission Indradhanush’ has facilitated free vaccinations for children up to 15 years, benefiting 1.32 crore mothers as well.
  • Telemedicine: The e-Sanjeevani app has enabled over 30.9 crore digital medical consultations, connecting rural populations with top health institutions.
  • Medical Education Expansion: Significant growth has been seen in medical infrastructure since 2014, with AIIMS increasing from 7 to 23, medical colleges from 387 to 780, and MBBS seats more than doubling from 51,000 to 1.18 lakh, with plans for an additional 75,000 seats.

HM Shah reiterated that the collective efforts towards better health are essential steps on the path to realising the vision of a developed India.
