Associate Professor Daiju Ueda from Osaka Metropolitan University’s Graduate School of Medicine has spearheaded a crucial study on the environmental costs associated with AI in healthcare. This research, involving leading members of the Japan Radiological Society and other medical researchers, sheds light on the substantial energy consumption, carbon emissions from data centers, and electronic waste generated by advanced AI systems.

The review emphasizes the urgent need for sustainable AI solutions in the medical field. It advocates for several key measures to address these environmental challenges, including:

  • Development of Energy-Efficient AI Models: Creating AI systems that consume less power and operate more efficiently.
  • Implementation of Green Computing Practices: Adopting computing practices that reduce energy consumption and minimize carbon footprints.
  • Utilization of Renewable Energy Sources: Transitioning data centers and AI infrastructure to renewable energy sources to cut down on carbon emissions.

The review also outlines guidelines for the sustainable deployment of AI within medical institutions. These guidelines are intended for medical institutions, policymakers, and AI developers, providing a framework for operating AI systems in an environmentally responsible manner.

“AI has the potential to significantly enhance the quality of healthcare,” noted Professor Ueda. “However, it is crucial to address its environmental impact. The best practices we have recommended represent initial steps toward achieving a balance between technological advancement and environmental stewardship. Moving forward, our challenge will be to implement and refine these recommendations in real-world medical settings. These efforts will also contribute to the development of standardized methods for assessing AI’s environmental impact and establishing an international regulatory framework.”
