New Delhi, June 6, 2025:
Amid a noticeable uptick in COVID-19 cases across the country, the Union Health Ministry has directed all states and Union Territories to reinforce their preparedness measures. Official sources confirmed that states have been instructed to ensure the availability of critical resources such as oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines.

A series of high-level technical review meetings took place on June 2 and 3, chaired by Dr. Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS). The meetings brought together representatives from the Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response (EMR) Cell, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), and central government hospitals in Delhi, as well as officials from all states and Union Territories.

Surveillance and Testing Intensified

State and district surveillance units under the IDSP are closely monitoring cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). As per the latest guidelines, testing is recommended for all hospitalized SARI cases and for 5% of ILI cases. Positive SARI samples are being sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network to monitor for new variants.

Current Case Numbers and Severity

As of June 4, India reported 4,302 active COVID-19 cases, marking an increase of 864 cases in the last 24 hours. Most cases have been described as mild and are being managed at home. Since January 1, there have been 44 reported deaths, primarily among individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Preparedness Drills and Public Advisory

A nationwide mock drill to assess oxygen supply systems—including PSA plants, LMO tanks, and MGPS lines—was conducted on June 2. Further facility-level preparedness drills are scheduled for this week.

Authorities have advised the public to maintain hand hygiene, practice cough etiquette, and avoid crowded places when feeling unwell. Individuals experiencing acute respiratory illness are encouraged to self-monitor and seek medical care if symptoms worsen.

The Health Ministry emphasized the importance of relying on trusted sources such as the ministry’s website and official PIB releases to avoid misinformation and rumors.

Ongoing Monitoring

“The Union Health Ministry continues to closely monitor the situation and remains committed to ensuring public health safety through timely interventions and effective communication,” an official source stated.
