Kolkata, India: The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday announced the seizure of spurious drugs, including anti-cancer and anti-diabetic formulations, valued at ₹6.6 crore during a raid in Kolkata. The operation also led to the arrest of one individual in connection with the case.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare revealed that the raid was a joint effort between the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), East Zone, and the Drugs Control Directorate, West Bengal. The investigation targeted a wholesale premises operating under the name M/s Care and Cure For You.
During the operation, authorities discovered a significant quantity of anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and other drugs suspected to be counterfeit. The seized drugs were labeled as being manufactured in countries such as Ireland, Turkey, the US, and Bangladesh. However, the absence of supporting documents to verify their legal importation raised concerns about their authenticity.
“In the absence of such documentation, these drugs are deemed to be spurious,” the ministry stated. The raid also uncovered empty packing materials, further intensifying suspicions about the origins and legitimacy of the products.
The total market value of the confiscated drugs is estimated to be ₹6.6 crore. To ensure thorough investigation, samples of the drugs have been sent for quality testing, while the remaining stock is being securely stored by the CDSCO.
The proprietor of the wholesale firm, identified as a woman, was taken into custody by the CDSCO Drugs Inspector, East Zone. She has been placed in judicial custody for 14 days, with authorities granted permission for further interrogation.
“The seizure and ongoing investigation highlight the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards counterfeit and substandard drugs,” the ministry emphasized, adding that efforts are being intensified to combat such illicit activities.
This incident marks a significant step in safeguarding public health, particularly in the critical areas of cancer and diabetes treatment, where the authenticity of medications is paramount. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
