New Delhi—The Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is facing heightened scrutiny in Parliament regarding the significant number of vacant positions within the National Medical Commission (NMC). Concerns have been raised about the potential impact of these vacancies on the regulation of medical education and practice in the country.

According to information presented in the Rajya Sabha, a total of 19 posts across the NMC’s four autonomous boards are currently vacant. These vacancies include critical positions such as the Presidents of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB), the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), and the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB). Additionally, numerous whole-time and part-time member positions within these boards remain unfilled.

Parliament members, notably A.D. Singh, have pressed the ministry for details on the duration of these vacancies and the steps being taken to address them. In response, the Minister of State for Health, Smt. Anupriya Patel, stated that advertisements have been published in national newspapers to solicit applications from qualified professionals.

Data provided in the parliamentary session indicates that some of these positions have been vacant for extended periods, with some vacancies dating back to September 2020, and with more recent vacancies occuring in 2024, and also in January of 2025. This has led to questions regarding the efficiency of the appointment process.

Concerns have been raised regarding the impact that these vacancies have on the efficency of the NMC, and the ability of the organization to properly regulate medical practices and education within India.

The NMC, established to replace the Medical Council of India, plays a crucial role in maintaining standards within the medical profession. The high volume of vacant positions has sparked worries regarding the commissions ability to function properly.

The Health Ministry has stated that the process of filling the vacant posts is currently under consideration.
