Health experts have issued a stark warning about the dangers of neglecting common symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA), emphasizing the significant impact on mobility and quality of life if left untreated.

Osteoarthritis, the most prevalent form of arthritis affecting millions globally, primarily targets weight-bearing joints such as the hands, knees, hips, and spine. As individuals age, the degenerative nature of the disease leads to cartilage deterioration, progressively impeding mobility and daily activities.

Dr. Rajeev Verma, a Joint Replacement Surgeon at Manipal Hospitals, New Delhi, emphasized the importance of early detection and intervention to effectively manage OA. He cautioned against dismissing subtle signs of joint pain, stiffness, and swelling as mere consequences of aging, highlighting the critical need for prompt medical attention.

“Osteoarthritis often manifests gradually, and early symptoms may be overlooked or attributed to aging. However, timely intervention is essential to preserve mobility and prevent further complications,” Dr. Verma stated.

In the initial stages, pain and stiffness may be confined to specific times, such as early mornings or after physical exertion. However, as the disease progresses, individuals may experience persistent discomfort even during rest or routine activities.

Dr. Verma underscored the challenge posed by late-stage presentations of OA in India, where patients often seek medical assistance only when joint damage is advanced. In such cases, intervention options may be limited, necessitating joint replacement surgery.

Dr. Akhilesh Yadav, Associate Director of Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement at Max Hospital, Vaishali, outlined various treatment modalities for OA management, including medication, physical therapy, weight management, and lifestyle modifications. He emphasized the importance of early intervention to control symptoms and enhance joint function.

Women, particularly after menopause, are at heightened risk of developing OA compared to men, Dr. Yadav noted. To mitigate the onset or progression of the condition, he advocated for a holistic approach encompassing a balanced diet, weight management, regular exercise, injury prevention, and ergonomic practices in daily activities.

As cases of joint pain continue to rise, awareness of osteoarthritis symptoms and proactive management strategies are crucial for maintaining mobility and improving overall quality of life. Early detection remains paramount in the fight against this debilitating condition, empowering individuals to take proactive steps towards better joint health.
