CHENNAI – The Tamil Nadu Health department has initiated a significant expansion of its Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccination program, adding seven new districts to its coverage. The initiative aims to provide a single dose of the JE vaccine to more than 2.7 million children aged one to 15 years. This expansion is a direct response to a rise in JE cases observed in these districts between 2023 and 2025.

Health Minister Ma. Subramanian officially launched the expanded program in Chennai, underscoring the government’s commitment to public health. The campaign will roll out in a phased manner, focusing on different age groups and locations over the next several months.

JE is a mosquito-borne viral disease that can lead to severe neurological complications, including seizures and death. The disease’s high fatality rate and the potential for long-term neurological damage in survivors make this vaccination drive a critical public health measure. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their lack of cumulative immunity from natural infection. The vaccine is administered as a one-time campaign and will eventually be integrated into the routine immunization program.

The campaign will target various locations:

  • August 13 to September 12: School vaccination campaigns for children aged five to 15 in all government and government-aided schools.
  • September 13 to October 12: Vaccination drives at anganwadi centers for children aged one to five and those who have dropped out of school.
  • October 13 to November 12: Coverage for children aged one to 15 in orphanages and juvenile homes.

The vaccination drive will take place on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays for a maximum of 12 days within each period, followed by a week for covering any children who were missed. The health department has urged parents, guardians, and school authorities to cooperate with health workers to ensure all eligible children receive the free vaccine.
