Haryana’s Health Minister, Arti Singh Rao, has inaugurated the ‘Ujjwal Drishti Haryana Abhiyan’, a sweeping new initiative aimed at improving eye health for millions in the state. The campaign, launched on Friday, is designed to provide free spectacles to schoolchildren and offer vision correction for citizens over 45 years old.
The ambitious programme targets the examination of approximately 21 lakh students across 14,267 government schools, with plans to distribute free spectacles to 40,000 students identified as in need. In addition to supporting children, the campaign will also screen citizens over 50 for cataracts and provide surgeries at government and NGO-run health facilities where necessary.
This initiative is part of the broader National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment, and Haryana has allocated a special budget to ensure its success. Over 1.4 lakh spectacles are slated for distribution through state hospitals and health centers, making it the largest campaign of its kind in India, according to Minister Rao.
The campaign’s launch event in Jhajjar saw participation from local officials and health experts, who emphasized the significance of the scheme in improving quality of life for Haryana’s residents. The event also included awareness activities on eye donation and the importance of healthy lifestyle choices for adolescents.
Minister Rao described the campaign as a major step towards a self-reliant and healthy Haryana, aiming not only to address immediate vision problems but also to foster long-term awareness and preventive care within communities.
“This initiative will provide much-needed relief to those who cannot afford spectacles, and will make a significant difference in the daily lives of many,” said a local official at the Jhajjar launch event.
