In a disturbing incident highlighting the challenges faced by medical professionals, a woman gynaecologist from Kandivali, Mumbai, has filed a police complaint after receiving extortion threats while setting up her new clinic in Borivali (West). The incident occurred around 1 PM on Tuesday at her clinic located in the Green Woods building in Shimpoli, Borivali (West).
According to the FIR registered at the Borivali police station, the doctor was not present at the clinic when an unidentified man arrived and halted the ongoing furniture and interior work. The individual allegedly threatened the labourers, stating that unless a payment of Rs 10,000 was made in the name of the Mathadi Workers’ Union, the work would not be allowed to continue.
The situation escalated when another man reportedly contacted the doctor directly, reiterating the demand and warning that failure to comply would result in the clinic’s operations being forcibly stopped and the premises vandalised. The doctor, who owns the property, stated, “I wasn’t present when the incident occurred and do not know these individuals. The property is self-owned, and this is the first time such a thing has happened”.
Based on her complaint, the Borivali police have registered an FIR against two unidentified persons under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway.
This incident is part of a concerning trend, as other doctors across India have also reported receiving extortion threats in recent months.
