AHMEDABAD – Gujarat has emerged as a national leader in vaccination efforts, achieving an impressive 95.95% score in the Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG-3) Index on National Vaccination Day. This figure surpasses the national average of 93.23%, highlighting the state’s robust public health infrastructure and effective immunization programs.
A cornerstone of this success is Mission Indradhanush, which has successfully immunized 9,95,395 children and 2,25,960 pregnant women across its various phases. Further bolstering these efforts, the Khilkhilat Campaign (January 16-22, 2025) administered crucial vaccines, including BCG, OPV, Penta, IPV, Rota, PCV, MR, and DPT, to 25,736 children.
The state’s commitment extends to its schools, where over 18 lakh children have received the Tetanus-Diphtheria vaccine in the past three years. Gujarat has also maintained its polio-free status since 2007, a significant milestone in its public health journey.
Between April 2024 and February 2025, Gujarat achieved 98% full immunization coverage for one-year-old children, setting a new benchmark. Specific vaccine coverage rates include 96% for BCG, 95% for Pentavalent (DPT+Hep-B+HiB), and 97% for Measles-Rubella (MR), reflecting the state’s aggressive vaccination drive.
Innovative outreach initiatives, such as Dhanvantri Rath, Tika Express, and Mobile Mamta Divas, have played a crucial role in extending immunization services to remote areas. The state’s aggressive push under Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI) has resulted in a 20% surge in immunization rates for children aged 0-2 years and pregnant women.
On National Immunization Day (NID) 2024, 82.49 lakh children received polio drops across 33 districts, and during the Sub-National Immunization Day (SNID), 42.97 lakh children aged 0-5 years were covered across 24 districts.
To further solidify its commitment, Gujarat’s Health Department is set to launch a special Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign on March 15-16, coinciding with National Vaccination Day.
The state’s success is attributed to its strategic focus on expanding vaccination services to newborns and pregnant women, ensuring widespread immunization coverage.
