Maharashtra is currently facing a significant health crisis with the emergence of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nerves. As of March 10, 2025, the state has reported a total of 225 GBS cases, resulting in 12 fatalities.
Current Statistics and Patient Status
Of the 225 reported cases, 179 patients have recovered and been discharged. However, 24 individuals remain in intensive care units, with 15 requiring ventilator support.
Geographical Distribution
The majority of cases are concentrated in Pune, where 173 individuals have been diagnosed. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has identified contaminated water as a potential cause of the outbreak, leading to the sealing of 30 private water supply plants in the affected areas.
Mumbai has also reported its first case—a 64-year-old woman currently receiving intensive care. citeturn0search6
Preventive Measures and Recommendations
Health authorities advise citizens to practice good hygiene, such as regular handwashing with soap and water, and to avoid consuming food from open or unregulated sources. Drinking boiled water is recommended to minimize the risk of infections that could trigger GBS. Individuals experiencing sudden muscle weakness or tingling sensations are urged to seek immediate medical attention.
