Maharashtra has reported two additional fatalities due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), bringing the state’s death toll to 11 and the national count to 14. The latest victims include a 45-year-old man from Pardi in Nagpur and a 60-year-old woman from Chandgad in Kolhapur.

Health officials have noted that the number of GBS cases in Maharashtra has been contained to below 200 since the outbreak began in January. Maharashtra’s Health Minister, Prakash Abitkar, emphasized that individuals with co-morbidities are more susceptible to severe outcomes from the syndrome.

GBS is a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis. While the exact cause is often unknown, it is frequently preceded by an infection.

Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and have implemented measures to prevent further spread. Residents are advised to seek medical attention promptly if they experience symptoms consistent with GBS.
