GREATER NOIDA – A tragic case in a rural part of Greater Noida has highlighted the often-overlooked risk of rabies transmission through the consumption of milk from an infected animal. A woman, whose family was involved in animal husbandry, succumbed to rabies after drinking milk from a cow that had been bitten by a stray dog.

The woman and her family were unaware that the cow had contracted the deadly virus. The animal had given birth to a calf two months prior, and its milk was regularly consumed by the family and other villagers. It was only when the cow began displaying symptoms of rabies that the family realised the danger and vaccinated the animal.

Despite the cow’s symptoms, the woman did not seek post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for herself. This critical oversight proved fatal. Following the identification of the infected cow, at least ten other villagers sought PEP vaccinations as a precautionary measure.

The woman subsequently developed severe rabies symptoms, including hydrophobia (fear of water), panic episodes, and heightened sensitivity to light. Her family desperately sought medical intervention, visiting multiple hospitals, but she was reportedly turned away. Ultimately, doctors at the district hospital advised them to take her home, where she died shortly after.

This incident underscores the importance of prompt medical attention and vaccination after potential rabies exposure, even from seemingly unconventional sources like contaminated milk. Health officials are urging individuals involved in animal husbandry to be vigilant and seek immediate medical advice if they suspect their animals have been exposed to rabies.
