Thiruvananthapuram, June 6, 2025:
A senior ophthalmologist at the Government Eye Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram has been suspended following a serious case of alleged medical negligence. The doctor, serving as an Assistant Professor, reportedly administered an injection to the wrong eye of a patient, prompting swift action from the hospital administration and the Director of Medical Education (DME).
Incident Details
The patient, Assor Beevi, a resident of Beemapally, was receiving treatment for vision issues related to high blood pressure. She was scheduled to receive an injection in her left eye to address a vein swelling. However, during the procedure in the operation theatre, the injection was mistakenly given in her right eye. Notably, Beevi’s left eye had been prepped and cleaned for the procedure, but the error occurred nonetheless.
The mistake was discovered after Beevi returned to the ward, when her family noticed the discrepancy and raised concerns. The family also highlighted that they had spent ₹6,000 to procure the injection as instructed by the doctor, intensifying their distress over the incident.
Hospital Response and Investigation
Upon learning of the incident, the hospital authorities initiated an investigation. The doctor involved reportedly justified his actions by claiming that the patient’s right eye “appeared red,” which he interpreted as a sign requiring treatment. However, this explanation was not accepted by the Head of the Ophthalmology Department, and the doctor was subsequently suspended pending further inquiry.
Broader Context
This incident has sparked renewed concerns about patient safety and medical accountability in public hospitals. It comes on the heels of other recent cases of alleged medical negligence in the region, underscoring the need for stringent protocols and oversight.
What’s Next?
The investigation by the Directorate of Medical Education is ongoing. The hospital has assured the public and the patient’s family that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.
