New Delhi, March 2: The central government has announced its ambitious plan to expand the network of Jan Aushadhi Kendras to 25,000 across the country by March 31, 2027. This announcement comes as part of the ongoing celebrations for Jan Aushadhi Diwas, observed annually on March 7.
With over 15,000 Kendras already operational, the government aims to further enhance access to affordable generic medicines for citizens. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative, Jan Aushadhi Diwas, seeks to raise awareness about the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya JanAushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) and promote the use of generic drugs.
A week-long series of events, from March 1 to 7, is being held nationwide to mark the occasion. The second day of the 7th Jan Aushadhi Diwas 2025, themed “Jan Aushadhi – Virasat Ke Saath,” commenced with heritage tours at 25 historical monuments across India.
To cater to senior citizens and promote traditional values, health camps were organized at 500 Jan Aushadhi Kendras. These camps offered a range of medical tests, including blood pressure and sugar level checks, along with free doctor consultations, to emphasize the importance of health and the PMBJP.
On Sunday, 25 heritage walks were conducted, including one at Hauz Khas in New Delhi, to further engage the public.
The Jan Aushadhi Kendras have seen a remarkable 200-fold increase in sales over the last decade, resulting in an estimated savings of Rs 30,000 crore for citizens. The number of Kendras has also increased by 180 times during this period.
Implemented by the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), the PMBJP, launched in November 2008, has significantly impacted healthcare affordability. In the financial year 2023-24, the PMBJP recorded sales of Rs 1,470 crore (at MRP), leading to savings of approximately Rs 7,350 crore for the public.
