New Delhi, December 9: The government has announced a call for public comments on proposed regulations for clinical electrical thermometers, aiming to enhance their accuracy and ensure uniformity in measuring human and animal body temperatures.

The initiative, led by the Legal Metrology Department under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, seeks to improve consumer safety and reliability in diagnostic tools that are widely used in households, healthcare facilities, and various industries.

“This initiative is a significant step toward strengthening consumer safety and promoting uniformity in the measurement of body temperature,” said a government spokesperson.

Key Features of the Proposed Rules

The draft rules, published on the Department of Consumer Affairs website on November 29, focus on standardising the precision of clinical electrical thermometers. The regulations aim to update existing standards to ensure the devices provide consistent and error-free readings, crucial for diagnosing conditions like fever and hypothermia in both humans and animals.

Key provisions include:

  • Verification and Stamping: Mandatory checks to ensure compliance with prescribed standards.
  • Enhanced Reliability: Measures to foster trust in thermometer readings, enabling healthcare professionals to make informed decisions.

Call for Stakeholder Engagement

The Ministry has invited stakeholders and the public to review the draft rules and submit their comments and suggestions by December 30. After incorporating feedback, the finalised rules will be implemented to ensure that all clinical electrical thermometers meet stringent accuracy standards.

“The provisions mandate verification and stamping of these devices to ensure their compliance with prescribed standards, thereby protecting the health and well-being of humans and animals,” the Ministry stated.

Building Consumer Trust

The move aligns with the Legal Metrology Department’s broader mission of safeguarding consumer interests by ensuring the accuracy and reliability of weighing and measuring devices. By addressing inconsistencies in thermometer performance, the government aims to strengthen public confidence in diagnostic tools.
