In a commendable initiative, the Government of India has introduced the “Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar,” a prestigious national award that aims to recognize outstanding contributions in the fields of Science, Technology, and Innovation. This National Award acknowledges and celebrates the exemplary work of researchers, technologists, and innovators who have made remarkable advancements in their respective domains.
Nominations and applications are invited for the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar (RVP), open to individuals or teams showcasing exceptional achievements in various scientific, technological, and innovation disciplines. The awards will be conferred in four distinct categories:
- Vigyan Ratna (VR): A maximum of three awards will be granted to recognize lifetime achievements and substantial contributions made in a specific field of Science and Technology.
- Vigyan Shri (VS): Up to 25 awards will be presented to honor distinguished contributions in a given field of Science and Technology.
- Vigyan Yuva Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (VY-SSB) Award (VY): A maximum of 25 awards will be bestowed to recognize and encourage young scientists who have made exceptional contributions in a specific field of Science and Technology.
- Vigyan Team (VT) Award: Up to three awards may be conferred to a team comprising three or more scientists, researchers, or innovators who have collectively made an outstanding contribution while working in a team in a given field of Science and Technology.
The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar will be presented in 13 distinct domains, including Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Mathematics & Computer Science, Earth Science, Medicine, Engineering Sciences, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, Technology & Innovation, Atomic Energy, Space Science and Technology, and Others.
Nominations for these awards are invited on the Award Portal of the Ministry of Home Affairs (https://awards.gov.in/) from January 14, 2024, to February 28, 2024. Detailed guidelines and RVP information are available on the awards portal. This year, the coordination of the awards is being led by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) under the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The esteemed awards will be officially announced on May 11, 2024 (National Technology Day), and the Award Ceremony for all categories is scheduled for August 23, 2024 (National Space Day). The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar serves as a commendable step towards recognizing and promoting excellence in the scientific and technological landscape of the nation.
