The Union government of India has imposed ceiling prices on four critical emergency-use medicines along with 37 other drugs including antibiotics and painkillers, aiming to make essential treatments more affordable. This move, announced by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), covers medicines for infections, heart conditions, inflammation, diabetes, and vitamin deficiencies.

The ceiling prices set include:

  • Ipratropium, for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease symptoms, capped at ₹2.96 per ml

  • Sodium Nitroprusside, an injectable for hypertensive emergencies and acute heart failure, capped at ₹28.99 per ml

  • Diltiazem, treating hypertension and chest pain, capped at ₹26.72 per capsule

  • Povidone Iodine, for skin disinfection, capped at ₹6.26 per gram

Additionally, the prices of widely used medications like paracetamol, atorvastatin, amoxicillin, and metformin have been reduced. Combination medicines, such as Aceclofenac-Paracetamol-Trypsin Chymotrypsin for anti-inflammation and Atorvastatin-Clopidogrel for cardiovascular use, are also included under the new ceiling prices.

The NPPA mandates companies selling at higher rates than the ceiling (plus GST) to revise them downward, whereas those already priced below the ceiling may maintain their current rates. The notified prices are GST-free, with GST applicable as extra if needed.

Retailers and distributors have been instructed to prominently display these updated prices. Non-compliance with the new ceiling prices will attract penalties under the Drug Price Control Order (DPCO) and the Essential Commodities Act, including recovery of overcharged amounts with interest.

This price cap is expected to alleviate the financial burden on patients requiring these essential medicines, ensuring wider accessibility and adherence to essential treatment protocols.
