March 8, 2024 – On International Women’s Day, Google Research has announced groundbreaking developments in utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize women’s healthcare globally. Recognizing historical systemic barriers and disparities in women’s health, Google aims to empower women and improve access to care through innovative AI solutions.
Throughout history, women have faced challenges in accessing adequate healthcare due to limited funding and research. However, Google Research believes that AI presents an unprecedented opportunity to overcome these barriers and put women at the forefront of healthcare solutions and research efforts.
Among the initiatives highlighted by Google Research is the use of AI to improve access to emergency obstetric care (EmOC). With maternal mortality rates alarmingly high, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, Google’s AI tools help map access to obstetric care facilities, enabling decision-makers to identify areas with poor geographic access and tailor recommendations for improvement. Partnering with the OnTime Consortium in Nigeria, Google’s technology is facilitating targeted interventions to ensure women can access critical health services promptly.
Another significant area of focus is prenatal ultrasounds, essential for monitoring pregnancy health. Many regions lack trained ultrasound technicians, limiting access to this vital screening tool. Google Research is developing AI technology to simplify ultrasound procedures and interpretation, expanding access to prenatal care. Collaborating with Jacaranda Health in Kenya, Google’s AI research is advancing ultrasound capabilities in maternity hospitals, benefiting hundreds of women participating in the study.
Breast cancer, the most common cancer worldwide, also receives attention from Google’s AI innovations. While mammograms remain the gold standard for screening, limitations in availability and effectiveness persist. Google is exploring the potential of ultrasound as a primary detection tool for breast cancer. Partnering with Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, Google’s AI models are being developed to enhance early detection through ultrasound imaging, offering promising results in initial studies.
Google Research’s efforts align with broader initiatives to bolster women’s health globally, including the U.S. government’s pioneering research initiative on women’s health. With growing attention and investment, Google is optimistic about the transformative impact these innovations will have in 2024 and beyond, advancing women’s health and empowerment worldwide.
