Srinagar Incident Sparks Outrage Across Medical Fraternity

Srinagar: In a shocking development at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital, affiliated with Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, a third-year postgraduate resident from the Department of Medicine was allegedly assaulted by a patient’s attendant immediately following the patient’s death.

According to reports, the incident, which has gone viral after being captured on CCTV, occurred on Tuesday in the hospital’s emergency ward. Sources indicate that the doctor, who is originally from Bihar and is physically handicapped, was brutally slapped with such force that he nearly collapsed to the floor.

Details of the Incident

  • The patient in question was brought to the emergency department in critical condition, with unrecordable blood pressure and pulse. Despite intensive efforts, including CPR, the medical team could not revive the patient.

  • Shortly after the incident, the patient’s attendant returned to the ward and directly assaulted the young doctor in front of several witnesses, including other patients and attendants.

  • The doctor subsequently filed a complaint, prompting the police to register a First Information Report (FIR) and initiate legal proceedings against the accused.

Medical Community Condemns Attack

The attack has been met with widespread condemnation from doctors and medical professionals both locally and nationally. Members of the medical fraternity took to social media to voice their outrage and demand strict action, highlighting that such violence demoralizes healthcare providers and undermines their ability to work safely.

Medical professionals have reiterated calls for better safety measures and legal protection for doctors. Many criticized the lack of adequate hospital security and questioned the effectiveness of existing state laws, urging the central government to implement a comprehensive Protection Act to safeguard healthcare workers.

“Doctors are healers and not punching bags. This pattern of violence must end, enough is enough,” stated one concerned doctor on social media.

Recent Surge in Hospital Violence

This incident is not isolated. Just a week earlier, two female junior doctors were reportedly assaulted in a similar attack at GMC Jammu, again following the death of a terminally ill patient. The recurring nature of such violence has led to strikes and heightened security concerns among healthcare staff in the region.

Hospital Response

GMC Srinagar administration has confirmed that necessary legal action is being taken and emphasized that their hospitals are public assets dedicated to patient care. The administration appealed to the public for cooperation and respect for medical workers.
