Encephalitis International has launched a major global campaign to raise awareness about the rising threat of encephalitis, a potentially fatal brain inflammation, as climate change accelerates the spread of infectious diseases worldwide. The campaign, titled “Preventing Future Encephalitis: Climate Change and Infectious Disease,” underscores the urgent need for vaccination as a critical defense against increasing cases of encephalitis and other preventable illnesses.

Encephalitis: A Growing Concern

Encephalitis affects 1.5 million people globally each year-equivalent to three people every minute-yet nearly 77% of the population remains unaware of the condition. This lack of awareness often leads to delays in diagnosis and treatment, resulting in poorer outcomes for patients. The disease can be triggered by infections such as Japanese encephalitis, measles, mumps, rubella, influenza, dengue, and West Nile virus, or by autoimmune reactions.

Climate Change and Disease Spread

The campaign highlights how climate change is intensifying the risk of encephalitis by expanding the habitats of disease-carrying vectors like mosquitoes and ticks. As global temperatures rise, these vectors are able to survive in new regions, increasing the likelihood of outbreaks in previously unaffected areas. Dr. Ava Easton, Chief Executive of Encephalitis International, emphasized that shifting ecosystems are enabling these disease carriers to establish themselves in broader territories, making vaccination and surveillance more crucial than ever.

Vaccination: Humanity’s Best Defense

Vaccines have saved an estimated 154 million lives globally since 1974, preventing millions of deaths each year from diseases such as measles, polio, and hepatitis B. However, outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, including encephalitis, are on the rise, with health organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF urging governments and individuals to prioritize immunization efforts.

Global Call to Action

The campaign, launched during World Immunization Week, calls for:

  • Increased public and professional awareness of encephalitis and its links to climate change.

  • Greater investment in vaccine research and distribution, especially in low- and middle-income countries where healthcare resources are limited7.

  • Strengthened immunization programs to protect progress made over the past five decades.

  • Enhanced surveillance, diagnostics, and aftercare for those affected by encephalitis.

About Encephalitis International

Encephalitis International is a UK-based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting those affected by encephalitis, raising awareness, and promoting research. Since its founding, the group has led global awareness efforts, including World Encephalitis Day, reaching hundreds of millions worldwide.
