A recent longitudinal study from Northern Sweden has revealed that girls are significantly more likely than boys to develop allergic rhinitis (AR) between the ages of 8 and 19. This finding highlights important sex differences in the risk and progression of this common chronic condition among children and adolescents.

Study Highlights

  • Incidence Rates: The study followed 2,250 children, with 1,338 undergoing skin prick tests at both 8 and 19 years of age. Over this period, the cumulative incidence of allergic rhinitis was 33.6%. Notably, the rate was much higher among girls (37.4%) compared to boys (29.8%), a statistically significant difference.

  • Risk Factors: Independent risk factors for developing AR included allergic sensitization before age 8 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 3.75), new sensitization between ages 8 and 19 (aOR 2.57), and being female (aOR 1.71).

  • Remission Rates: While the overall remission rate for AR was 40.0%, boys had a significantly higher remission rate than girls (45.4% vs. 32.2%). Sensitization both before and after age 8 greatly reduced the likelihood of remission.

  • Impact: Allergic rhinitis can negatively affect sleep, school productivity, and quality of life, making these findings highly relevant for families and healthcare providers.

Implications

The results underscore the importance of early identification and intervention, particularly among girls and children who show evidence of allergic sensitization. These measures could potentially help reduce the risk and burden of allergic rhinitis later in adolescence and young adulthood.
