On August 4, 2025, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced an unprecedented commitment of $2.5 billion to accelerate research and development in women’s health, aiming to address longstanding gaps in medical innovation and care that disproportionately affect women—especially those in low- and middle-income countries.

Addressing Chronic Underfunding and Overlooked Health Challenges

Despite women comprising half the global population, only about 1% of all health research and innovation funding targets female-specific conditions beyond oncology. Critical health areas such as gynecological disorders, pregnancy complications, contraceptive development, sexually transmitted infections, and disorders like endometriosis and menopause remain significantly under-researched.

Dr. Anita Zaidi, president of the Foundation’s Gender Equality Division, emphasized, “For too long, women have suffered from health conditions that are misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or simply ignored. We want this investment to spark a new era of women-centered innovation—one where women’s lives, bodies, and voices are truly prioritized in healthcare R&D”.

Five Focus Areas for Impact

The $2.5 billion will advance over 40 innovations through 2030, focusing on:

  • Obstetric care

  • Maternal nutrition

  • Menstrual and gynecological health

  • Contraceptive innovation

  • Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV prevention for women

In addition to advancing new treatments, the funding will support data collection and advocacy to ensure broad adoption of new products once approved—particularly targeting the world’s most vulnerable women and girls.

Broad Economic and Social Benefits

Research cited by the Foundation points to long-term benefits from investing in women’s health. Every $1 spent is estimated to yield $3 in economic growth and, according to projections, closing the gender health gap could add $1 trillion to the global economy annually by 2040.

Bill Gates, the Foundation’s co-chair, stressed the broad value of the initiative: “Investing in women’s health creates healthier families, stronger economies, and a more just world. Yet, women’s health continues to be ignored, underfunded, and sidelined. That must change.”

Experts Applaud, Call for Even Greater Action

Medical professionals and women’s health advocates welcomed the announcement but also noted that much more is needed. Dr. Bosede Afolabi, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Lagos, described the underinvestment in women’s health as visible daily, sometimes with tragic outcomes. “This commitment brings crucial global attention and resources to conditions that uniquely affect women—especially where the burden is highest,” she noted.
