Indore, Madhya Pradesh – In observance of World Health Day, a significant public health initiative has commenced in Indore with the launch of a free Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination drive at the government-run Maharaja Tukojirao Holkar (MTH) Hospital, which is affiliated with MGM Medical College.

The program, which began on Monday, April 7th, specifically targets girls between the ages of 9 and 14 who belong to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. The primary aim of this drive is the prevention of cervical cancer, a serious health concern linked to HPV infections.

The Human Papillomavirus is a common sexually transmitted infection primarily spread through skin-to-skin contact. While there are over 40 known strains, certain types pose significant health risks, potentially leading to cervical, oral, throat, head, and neck cancers, or causing genital warts. The vaccine being administered protects against the most dangerous strains, notably types 6, 11, 16, and 18, which are strongly associated with these severe health outcomes.

This commendable campaign is a collaborative effort between the Indore Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, under the leadership of Dr. Sumitra Yadav, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at MTH Hospital. Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria, Dean of MGM Medical College, has lent his support by ensuring the necessary staff and facilities are available for the smooth execution of the drive.

Eligible girls wishing to receive the vaccination, which typically costs around Rs 9,000 per dose in the private sector, can avail it completely free of charge during this drive. To register, they must present either a birth certificate or a school ID card, their Aadhaar card, and the Aadhaar card of one parent to provide consent.

The vaccination sessions are scheduled from April 7th to April 12th, running daily between 9 am and 6 pm in Room G2 of the MTH Hospital. A dedicated help desk has also been established at the hospital to assist families and answer queries related to the vaccination drive.
