Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) in Uttar Pradesh are voicing frustration and helplessness following the release of the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) allotment list on June 13. The list, issued by the Uttar Pradesh Medical Council (UPMC), assigned internships to only about 800 FMGs under the UP domicile category—far fewer than the estimated 1,200 to 1,300 candidates who cleared the FMG Exam in January and are awaiting placements.

Shortfall in Seats and Lack of Transparency

FMGs allege the number of allotted seats is not only insufficient but also inconsistent with the state’s capacity. According to National Medical Commission data, Uttar Pradesh could potentially offer up to 2,500 internship seats for FMGs, yet less than half were made available this year. Of the seats allotted, only 340 were in government hospitals—down from 600 last year—with the majority in private hospitals where stipend guarantees are absent.

Additionally, FMGs claim that seats from district health centres and autonomous hospitals were not opened, further reducing available opportunities. When candidates sought clarification from the UPMC, they were advised either to apply in other states or wait for an unspecified “next round of internship counselling,” with no timeline provided.

Growing Frustration Among Graduates

Many FMGs have already spent five months waiting for their internship allotments. The lack of communication and transparency from the UPMC has left them feeling “clueless” and “helpless.” One candidate, Chandu* (name changed), expressed disappointment after clearing the FMGE on his first attempt, only to find his efforts unrewarded due to the seat shortfall.

Another FMG, Kumar* (name changed), questioned why the council could not accommodate all qualified candidates, especially since applicants had already paid a non-refundable fee of Rs 6,000. He also criticized the council’s handling of the allotment list, which was released just before the weekend and, confusingly, titled for a different recruitment process.

Next Steps and Uncertain Future

In response, FMGs plan to gather at the UPMC office in Lucknow on Monday, June 16, seeking clarity and demanding more internship seats. However, many are skeptical about receiving timely or satisfactory answers.

For these graduates, timely commencement of internships is critical, as delays could jeopardize their eligibility for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test – Postgraduate (NEET-PG) 2026. Some have even stated they are willing to forgo stipends if only they could secure an internship placement.

Broader Context: Nationwide Internship Crisis

The situation in Uttar Pradesh mirrors similar struggles faced by FMGs in other states, including Delhi, Bihar, and West Bengal, where delays, insufficient seats, and lack of official communication have left many qualified graduates in career limbo.
