A 27-year-old doctor pursuing his first year of postgraduate studies in surgery at the Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Mangaluru, has died following a COVID-19 infection. The young medico, originally from Hardalli in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district, was undergoing advanced training when he contracted the virus. His parents, currently residing in Mudigere, Chikkamagaluru district, will conduct his final rites there.
This incident occurs during a period when India’s fight against COVID-19 has entered a new phase. Health authorities report that the virus has become endemic, now causing small, localized clusters rather than widespread outbreaks. Recent government data shows a consistent decline in active COVID-19 cases, dropping from 7,000 on June 11 to 4,425. Only one COVID-related death was reported nationwide in the past 24 hours, highlighting a steady downward trend. Experts attribute a brief increase in cases earlier this year to the JN.1.16 sub-variant, while newer variants such as LF.7 and LP.8.1.2 have also been detected through ongoing genome surveillance.
Despite the overall decline, this tragedy underscores that COVID-19 can still pose serious risks, even as the country transitions to a new phase of managing the virus.
