Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh has reported its first death due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune condition that affects the nervous system. A 10-year-old boy from Santhabommali, Srikakulam, succumbed to the illness at King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam after his condition deteriorated despite medical intervention.
According to reports, the boy was initially admitted to a private hospital on January 31 before being transferred to government hospitals in Srikakulam and later to KGH in Visakhapatnam. Unfortunately, despite receiving treatment, he did not survive.
The state has identified 17 cases of GBS so far, with patients currently undergoing treatment in government hospitals across Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Guntur, and Kurnool. State Health Secretary MT Krishna Babu reassured the public that adequate medical resources, including immunoglobulin therapy, are available for affected individuals. He also emphasized that most cases of GBS tend to be mild and manageable with timely intervention.
To alleviate concerns, health officials have confirmed that GBS treatment is covered under the Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva scheme, ensuring financial assistance for those in need. The state government has urged citizens to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of GBS, such as weakness, tingling sensations, or difficulty in movement, arise.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, potentially leading to muscle weakness and paralysis in severe cases. While the exact cause remains unknown, GBS is often preceded by viral or bacterial infections.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have reassured the public that there is no cause for panic.
