Kolkata: In a shocking revelation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has unearthed a major scam involving expired medicines being repackaged and sold to RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata. The investigation, centered around financial irregularities at the institution, has uncovered evidence implicating several key figures in the fraudulent scheme, according to IANS reports.
Key Accusations and Findings
The alleged mastermind of the operation is Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the controversial former principal of RG Kar Medical College. Sources close to the investigation revealed that Dr. Ghosh, in collaboration with a network of retail distributors, facilitated the rewrapping of expired medicines with updated expiry dates.
Rather than disposing of expired medicines as per standard protocols, these drugs were returned to the distributors, repackaged, and resold to the medical college. The scam particularly targeted high-priced medicines, including critical drugs used in the Chest Medicine Department. Reports suggest that Dr. Ghosh profited significantly by earning commissions from these illicit transactions.
Potential Links to a Tragic Crime
The investigation has also shed light on a possible link between the scam and the rape and murder of a woman doctor from the Chest Medicine Department in August. Witnesses have told officials that the victim had raised concerns about the poor quality of medicines supplied to her department. The CBI is now examining whether her objections to the substandard drugs might have played a role in the tragic crime.
Dr. Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tala Police Station, are both under scrutiny for allegedly obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence in the murder case.
Ongoing Investigations
The CBI is pursuing two parallel probes: one into the financial irregularities linked to Dr. Ghosh and the other into the rape and murder case. Investigators are focused on uncovering the full extent of the scam, identifying all individuals involved, and determining whether there are broader systemic issues contributing to the malpractice.
The revelations have sparked outrage among the public and medical community alike, with calls for stringent action against those involved in endangering lives through such unethical practices.
RG Kar Medical College, one of Kolkata’s leading healthcare institutions, now faces serious questions about its procurement processes and internal oversight mechanisms. The institution has not yet issued an official statement regarding the CBI’s findings.
This unfolding scandal raises grave concerns about the integrity of healthcare systems and the urgent need for stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
