On International Women’s Day, experts caution women about endometriosis, a condition often regarded as a silent killer of ovaries and a slow killer of fertility. March, designated as Endometriosis Awareness Month, sheds light on this debilitating disease affecting millions of women worldwide.

Endometriosis, characterized by the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, is becoming increasingly prevalent, particularly in Karnataka, experts warn. Dr. Usha BR, Consultant Obstetrician, and Gynecologist at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, revealed that approximately 70% of women experiencing painful menstrual periods and dyspareunia are diagnosed with endometriosis.

“Endometriosis is a silent killer of ovaries and a slow killer of fertility,” Dr. Usha emphasized, highlighting its detrimental effects on reproductive health.

Dr. Ramesh B, Chief Laparoscopic Surgeon and Endometriosis Specialist at Altius Hospital, Bengaluru, noted that the disease often remains veiled by misdiagnosis, prolonging needless suffering for women. He stressed the importance of early detection, particularly in adolescence, to mitigate anguish and preserve fertility.

Despite its prevalence, endometriosis poses significant challenges in diagnosis and management, compounded by factors like cost and symptom complexity. Dr. Sharvari Mundhe, Consultant Gynecologist and Fertility Specialist at Motherhood Hospital, Sarjapur, Bengaluru, emphasized the urgent need for effective treatment options and increased investment in research and education to empower women in managing symptoms and safeguarding reproductive health.

Dr. Usha highlighted that endometriosis, affecting 1 in 7 women, often presents with pelvic pain, heavy periods, and infertility. She stressed the importance of early detection through comprehensive evaluation, including pelvic exams and laparoscopic surgery for definitive confirmation and treatment.

“Lifestyle changes, such as diet modifications and stress reduction, may complement medical treatments. Early detection and comprehensive management improve outcomes, offering relief and enhancing the quality of life for those affected,” Dr. Usha concluded.

As endometriosis continues to affect millions globally, raising awareness and prioritizing research and education are essential to empower women in combating this silent threat to their health and fertility.
