Pune, July 8, 2025 — Health experts are raising alarms as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder once mostly seen in adult women, is increasingly being diagnosed in teenage girls. Recent findings suggest that social media addiction, particularly to platforms like Instagram, is fueling lifestyle patterns that may trigger hormonal imbalances and contribute to this worrying trend.

According to the World Health Organization, PCOS is characterized by irregular periods, elevated androgen levels, and multiple ovarian cysts. The condition also carries long-term health risks, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and endometrial cancer. Disturbingly, doctors are now seeing PCOS in girls as young as 10 years old.

A study published in the journal Reproductive Health found a PCOS prevalence of 17.40% among young women in Delhi and the NCR region, with experts linking this spike to digital addiction, poor sleep, physical inactivity, and extreme diet trends.

Instagram’s Influence and Lifestyle Shifts

Teenagers today are spending extended hours scrolling through curated images on Instagram, which can lead to anxiety, low self-esteem, and chronic stress. The relentless pressure to conform to beauty standards elevates cortisol—the body’s stress hormone—which disrupts insulin regulation. Elevated insulin and cortisol levels are both major contributors to PCOS1.

Physical inactivity is another concern. Screen-bound lifestyles reduce movement, promote weight gain, and increase the risk of insulin resistance, all of which are closely tied to PCOS. Experts recommend regular exercise—such as walking, swimming, cycling, or aerobics—to help manage symptoms.

Sleep Disruption and Diet Trends

Late-night screen exposure disrupts sleep patterns and interferes with melatonin production, further intensifying hormonal imbalances and impacting metabolism and weight. Additionally, the spread of extreme and unverified diet trends on social media is prompting many teenagers to follow restrictive diets without medical guidance, leading to deficiencies in vital nutrients like Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, and iron—all essential for hormonal stability.

Call for Comprehensive Solutions

Doctors emphasize the need for a holistic approach to address this growing crisis. They urge parents and educators to promote awareness about the link between lifestyle and PCOS, encourage physical activity, and limit screen time. At the systemic level, healthcare professionals advocate for personalized treatment plans and tighter regulations on misleading diet content and unrealistic beauty standards on social media.

“Lifestyle choices deeply influence hormonal health, and in the age of Instagram, that influence starts earlier than ever,” experts caution.
