As the world gears up to observe World Obesity Day on March 4, experts sound the alarm on the urgent need to tackle the global obesity epidemic, emphasizing its dire consequences on health and well-being.

A recent global analysis published by The Lancet revealed alarming statistics, indicating that over 1 billion individuals worldwide, equating to every eighth person, are grappling with obesity. Furthermore, the report highlighted a concerning trend of escalating obesity rates, with the number of overweight adults more than doubling over the past three decades. Among children and adolescents aged 5 to 19, obesity rates have quadrupled, underscoring the urgency of the issue.

In India, where non-communicable diseases are already rampant, the obesity crisis is particularly pronounced. The Lancet’s findings disclosed that a staggering 12.5 million children and millions of adults across the country are affected by obesity, representing a significant health burden.

Dr. Gaurav Bansal, Senior Consultant in General Laparoscopic Laser and Bariatric Surgery at Marengo Asia Hospital, Gurugram, emphasized the detrimental impact of obesity on health, highlighting its association with chronic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Vivek Bindal, Director & Head of the Max Institute of Minimal Access, Bariatric & Robotic Surgery at Max Hospital, Vaishali, underscored the multifaceted implications of childhood obesity, encompassing physical, psychological, and social well-being.

Addressing the root causes of obesity requires concerted efforts on various fronts, including promoting healthy lifestyle habits, restricting access to unhealthy foods, and fostering a supportive environment for affected individuals. Dr. S K Wagnoo, Senior Consultant Endocrinologist at Apollo Indraprastha Hospital, New Delhi, stressed the importance of regular health check-ups and early intervention to mitigate the risk of chronic diseases associated with obesity.

Furthermore, experts advocated for community engagement and awareness campaigns to combat societal stigmas surrounding obesity and foster a culture of acceptance and support for affected individuals. By prioritizing prevention and adopting a comprehensive approach to obesity management, stakeholders can work towards curbing the obesity epidemic and safeguarding public health for future generations.
