As the world gears up to commemorate World Oral Health Day on March 20, experts are shedding light on the profound impact of oral health on overall wellness, emphasizing that a bright and healthy smile is not merely about aesthetics but is crucial for maintaining good health.
The theme for this year’s World Oral Health Day, “A happy mouth is a happy body,” underscores the integral role that oral health plays in our overall well-being. According to Dr. Nitika, a Consultant in Dental Science at Fortis Hospital Greater Noida, neglecting oral health can lead to a myriad of issues, ranging from gum disease to tooth decay, and even systemic health problems like heart disease and diabetes.
Dr. Ragini Sehgal Sethi, Senior Consultant in Dental Sciences at Medanta Hospital Lucknow, highlighted the significance of oral hygiene in preventing oral infections and maintaining overall health. “The mouth serves as the entry point to the digestive and respiratory tract. Without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can proliferate, leading to oral infections such as tooth decay and gum disease,” Dr. Sethi explained.
Moreover, poor oral health can have far-reaching consequences, affecting various aspects of daily life. Dr. Sethi noted that it might impair the ability to chew, limit food choices, and result in weight loss, gastrointestinal disturbances, and impaired communication. Additionally, it can impact self-esteem and overall well-being.
Recent studies have also established links between oral infections, particularly periodontitis, and systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, bacterial pneumonia, pregnancy complications, and more. Dr. Sethi underscored that conditions like diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and various cancers can also impact oral health.
To maintain optimal oral health, experts advocate for establishing a routine of brushing at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing, and regular visits to the dentist for check-ups and cleanings. By prioritizing oral hygiene practices and seeking professional dental care, individuals can safeguard their oral health and contribute to their overall well-being.
As World Oral Health Day approaches, the message is clear: a healthy mouth is fundamental to a healthy body.
