New Delhi, June 3, 2025 — As India faces a fresh uptick in Covid-19 cases, public health experts are urging the government to intensify sewage-based epidemiological surveillance and genome sequencing. This call to action comes amid concerns that early detection of outbreaks and emerging variants is crucial to prevent larger waves of infection.

A recent high-level meeting convened by India’s network of laboratories, established to monitor genomic changes in the Covid-19 virus, brought together officials from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), epidemiologists, and other public health experts. The consensus: India must remain vigilant and cannot afford complacency.

Sewage Surveillance: A Critical Early Warning Tool

Experts highlighted that analyzing sewage water can reveal the presence of Covid-19 variants days or even weeks before they appear in clinical testing. “Surveillance of public health and pathogen genomics will help assess threats better,” said Dr. Anurag Agrawal, Dean of Biosciences and Health Research at Ashoka University.

This approach, known as wastewater-based epidemiology, has proven effective in other countries for tracking infectious disease trends and identifying new variants before they spread widely.

Current Situation and Emerging Threats

According to the Ministry of Health’s Covid-19 dashboard, India has reported 203 new Covid-19 cases since Sunday, bringing the total number of active cases to 3,961. Four new deaths were recorded—one each in Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Kerala—raising the death toll since January 1 to 32. Authorities noted that most recent fatalities were linked to other health issues, with Covid-19 being incidental rather than the primary cause.

Officials emphasized the importance of monitoring for any unusual patterns or clusters of cases, especially with the detection of a new coronavirus variant, NB 1.8.1, in India and other parts of the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified this as a “variant under monitoring.”

Advice for the Public

Experts warn that India could see an increase in flu-like illnesses in the coming months. They advise elderly individuals and those with compromised immune systems to remain particularly cautious, adhere to Covid-appropriate behavior, wear masks, and maintain good hygiene practices.

While the current outbreak is considered to pose little threat to the general population, experts stress the need for ongoing vigilance and robust surveillance systems to quickly identify and respond to any escalation.
