While intermittent fasting has gained popularity for its purported weight loss and health benefits, a leading expert cautions that the diet plan may not be suitable for women due to potential hormonal impacts and associated health risks.
Edwina Raj, Head of Services for Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, highlighted the distinct physiological responses of women to intermittent fasting compared to men.
“Female hormones like oestrogen and progesterone are significantly influenced by intermittent fasting, which can disrupt the delicate hormonal balance and potentially affect menstruation and fertility,” Raj explained.
She elaborated on the hormonal mechanism, stating that fasting can disturb the Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle, leading to symptoms like mood swings, headaches, reduced libido, and sleep disturbances.
In addition to hormonal disruptions, Raj emphasized that intermittent fasting might pose particular challenges for women trying to conceive, pregnant, or breastfeeding. Fasting could lower ovulation rates and complicate fertility efforts, while pregnant and breastfeeding women require additional nourishment for fetal development and milk production.
“For women with eating disorders or those on medication, intermittent fasting may exacerbate unhealthy eating habits and interfere with drug efficacy,” Raj cautioned.
Despite these concerns, Raj acknowledged that intermittent fasting could be navigated safely by women with adequate precautions and nutritional guidance. She recommended starting with a conservative fasting window, gradually extending it under supervision.
Raj advised incorporating nutrient-rich foods such as lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains during eating windows while avoiding processed foods. Additionally, she suggested timing fasting periods strategically, preferably during specific phases of the menstrual cycle to minimize hormonal disruptions.
“Seeking advice from a registered dietitian before embarking on intermittent fasting is crucial to tailor the approach to individual health needs and mitigate potential risks,” Raj emphasized.
In essence, while intermittent fasting may offer benefits for some individuals, particularly men, women should exercise caution and prioritize their hormonal and nutritional needs when considering this dietary regimen. Collaboration with healthcare professionals ensures a balanced and sustainable approach to intermittent fasting, promoting overall well-being for women.
