In a unique cultural twist, expectant mothers in Uttar Pradesh are reportedly requesting early cesarean sections to ensure their child is born on the auspicious day of the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which falls on January 22. While this desire is driven by religious beliefs, doctors warn of potential risks associated with scheduled C-sections.

According to a doctor in Uttar Pradesh, approximately 14 to 15 families have made such requests, emphasizing their wish for the child to be born on the sacred day. To accommodate this unusual demand, doctors are preparing for around 30 cesarean section surgeries on January 22, exceeding the typical daily average of 14 to 15 surgeries.

Cesarean sections, or C-sections, are surgical procedures conducted when a vaginal birth is deemed impractical or unsafe for the mother or baby. Factors that may warrant a C-section include the baby’s incorrect position, difficulty fitting through the birth canal, or the mother’s inability to initiate labor.

While doctors are working to fulfill these requests, they highlight the inherent risks associated with scheduled C-sections. These risks include infections, potential damage to internal organs, and an increased risk of respiratory distress for the newborn, among other complications. Additionally, scheduling a C-section ahead of natural labor poses risks to the baby’s health.

Scheduled C-sections, also known as elective cesarean deliveries, are not considered the safest option due to the potential immaturity of the baby. Natural labor typically occurs when both the baby and mother are ready, usually after 39 weeks of gestation. Premature deliveries at 37 weeks, as requested for religious reasons, may lead to health issues for the baby, affecting their immunity and overall well-being.

Medical experts emphasize the importance of allowing natural labor to occur when both the baby and mother are physically prepared, promoting the healthiest outcome for both. Despite cultural and religious considerations, prioritizing the well-being of the mother and newborn remains a key concern for healthcare professionals.

As the demand for scheduled C-sections aligns with the consecration of the Ram Temple, healthcare providers stress the need for careful consideration of potential health risks associated with such deliveries.

It’s crucial to strike a balance between respecting cultural beliefs and ensuring the safety and well-being of both mother and child during childbirth. While doctors are working to accommodate these unique requests, they emphasize the importance of prioritizing medical considerations to minimize potential risks associated with scheduled C-sections.
