A recent Danish study has found that excessive screen time among children and young adults significantly raises the risk of heart and metabolic diseases. Tracking over 1,000 participants aged 10 and 18, researchers observed that spending more hours on phones, TVs, and other electronic devices correlates with increased cardiometabolic risk factors such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and insulin resistance. Each additional hour of daily screen use was linked to a higher risk score, with three extra hours per day increasing risk by roughly a quarter to half a standard deviation compared to peers.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, warns that this early increase in cardiometabolic risk could translate into greater likelihood of developing serious cardiovascular diseases or diabetes later in life. The findings are especially pronounced among children and adolescents who get insufficient sleep; inadequate sleep not only magnifies the harmful effects of screen time but may also mediate about 12% of the increased risk by shortening sleep duration.

Researchers recommend limiting recreational screen time and promoting balanced daily routines that include physical activity and healthy sleep habits to mitigate these risks. Strategies such as restricting screen use an hour before bedtime, encouraging outdoor play, and establishing screen-free periods are suggested to support better heart health in the digital age.
