Mandya, Karnataka – In a significant stride towards promoting women’s health and environmental sustainability, nearly 2,200 menstrual cups were distributed in Mandya under the ‘Sakhi Suraksha’ scheme. The initiative, announced by Rural Development Minister Priyank Kharge, aims to empower women by providing sustainable menstrual hygiene options and raising awareness about eco-friendly menstrual products.
Funded through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support, the first phase of the scheme focuses on training Asha workers, who will act as community educators to promote the usage of menstrual cups at the household level. Future phases will expand to cover Anganwadi workers, school staff, and members of women’s cooperative societies, ensuring wider outreach across rural areas.
Minister Kharge highlighted the dual benefits of the program: reducing environmental waste created by single-use sanitary products and encouraging the use of reusable menstrual cups, which provide not only economic relief but also a safe and dignified alternative for women. Emphasizing menstrual health as a natural and dignified aspect of life, he hoped the scheme would help break social taboos and empower women to make informed choices.
The Sakhi Suraksha initiative is positioned as both a step towards gender equality and a model for sustainable health interventions in rural India, with the ultimate goal of reaching even more beneficiaries in further phases.
