Singapore, May 6, 2025 – The Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP) of India received significant recognition at the Philanthropy Asia Summit (PAS) 2025, with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam highlighting its transformative impact on rural development. Launched in 2018 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the programme targets 112 of India’s most underdeveloped districts, aiming to accelerate socio-economic progress by fostering community ownership and agency.

President Shanmugaratnam praised the initiative’s innovative approach to empowering local populations, particularly women, who play a pivotal role in managing grassroots health facilities such as clinics and Anganwadis. This focus has led to measurable improvements in maternal and child health outcomes, a core objective of the programme.

The ADP’s success is bolstered by partnerships with global philanthropic organizations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Piramal Foundation, and Tata Trusts. These collaborations provide crucial financial and technical support to strengthen local health systems, enhance education infrastructure, and address environmental challenges like waste management.

In a complementary development announced at PAS 2025, Singapore’s Temasek Trust unveiled new initiatives targeting global health and clean energy investments. These projects aim to mobilize substantial resources to combat climate change and health crises across Asia, underscoring a shared regional commitment to sustainable development.

The spotlight on India’s Aspirational Districts Programme at an international forum like PAS 2025 reflects growing global confidence in community-driven development models that prioritize inclusivity and measurable impact.
