Kolkata, June 9, 2025 — Medical experts in Kolkata are raising concerns over a rising trend: elderly individuals with pre-existing health conditions and children who suffered from adenovirus infections in the last three years are now more vulnerable to complications from current COVID-19 strains.

Recurring Respiratory Illnesses Raise Alarms

Pulmonologists across the city report that many patients who previously recovered from adenovirus-triggered pneumonia or respiratory tract infections are now experiencing recurring respiratory issues. These include frequent bouts of asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and respiratory distress, all of which increase their risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes.

“Children and the elderly now form the bulk of COVID-19 patients admitted to city hospitals,” said Dr. Raja Dhar, Director of Pulmonology at CMRI Hospital. He explained that during the pandemic, immunity against common non-COVID respiratory viruses dropped sharply, as people stayed home and virus circulation was minimal. “When these viruses returned post-COVID, infections were more severe due to lower resistance. About 5% of these patients have lasting scars on their lungs, though we are now returning to previous immunity levels,” Dr. Dhar added.

The Aftermath of the 2022-23 Adenovirus Outbreak

Kolkata experienced a significant adenovirus outbreak during the winter of 2022-23, affecting thousands—mostly children. Pediatrician Dr. Shantanu Ray noted, “Many of these children have recurring, though mostly mild, infections. However, the severity of infections post-COVID has increased. During the 2022-23 outbreak, we saw many deaths and a higher need for hospitalisation and steroid treatments.”

Dr. Sauren Panja, an intensivist at RN Tagore Hospital, suggested that the more severe impact of post-COVID respiratory infections, including adenovirus, could be due to immunological changes brought on by COVID-19 or alterations in the adenovirus strain itself. “Those infected have become more susceptible to respiratory disorders such as coughs, colds, breathing distress, and frequent asthma attacks,” he said.

Vulnerability Among the Elderly

Elderly patients who had adenovirus infections in recent years are now more prone to COPD, asthma, and other respiratory tract infections. “Their resistance has dropped, and some have developed lung fibrosis, though not always acute,” Dr. Panja added.

Environmental Factors and Ongoing Risks

Dr. Soumya Sengupta, a pulmonologist at Charnock Hospital, pointed out that frequent temperature fluctuations have also contributed to the rise in respiratory infections. “Those with a history of adenovirus infection need to be especially careful,” he advised. Fortunately, in most cases, children have not suffered permanent lung damage, though the risk of recurring illness remains.

What This Means for Families

With children and the elderly forming the majority of COVID-19 hospital admissions in Kolkata, doctors urge families to remain vigilant, especially if there is a history of adenovirus infection. Preventive measures, timely medical consultation, and monitoring of respiratory symptoms are strongly recommended.
