New Delhi, Aug 17 – Consuming more than 60g of almonds daily could do much more than curb hunger—it may help shield human DNA and reduce oxidative stress, according to new research from Indian scientists.

Oxidative stress, a process fueled by an excess of free radicals, is known to accelerate aging, trigger inflammation, and contribute to chronic diseases. The new study highlights how almonds, rich in vitamin E, healthy fats, and powerful antioxidants, play a critical role in neutralizing these harmful molecules and supporting overall cellular health.

Experts note that regular almond consumption bolsters immune function and has even shown potential to slow visible signs of aging. The health benefits are rooted in almonds’ nutritional profile, which includes antioxidants, flavonoids, and polyphenols—compounds that help protect cell membranes and DNA from damage.

The latest research builds upon earlier randomized trials, where participants who ate 84g of almonds daily experienced marked reductions in DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, and key oxidative stress indicators. According to study authors, the 60g daily threshold—equivalent to about 40 to 45 almonds—delivers optimal antioxidant effects.

“Almonds offer a practical and versatile solution to incorporate powerful nutrients into daily routines. Beyond snacking, they can be added to smoothies, sprinkled over meals, or consumed as almond butter,” noted a senior nutritionist not involved in the study.

With mounting evidence underscoring almonds as a natural superfood, health professionals recommend their inclusion as part of a balanced diet to enhance energy levels and deliver long-term cellular protection.
