Union Health Minister JP Nadda emphasized the critical role of early detection and timely treatment in managing asthma on World Asthma Day, observed annually on the first Tuesday of May. This year’s theme, “Asthma education empowers,” highlights the importance of awareness in combating this chronic respiratory disease affecting millions globally.
In a social media post, Nadda called for enhanced asthma care through early diagnosis and proper management to improve patients’ quality of life. He urged healthcare professionals, policymakers, and communities to unite in reducing asthma-related complications and deaths.
Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, also appealed to citizens to recognize symptoms early and seek prompt medical attention. She stressed lifestyle improvements, pollution control, and awareness as key preventive measures.
According to the Global Asthma Report 2022, over 35 million Indians suffer from asthma, with more than 260 million affected worldwide, resulting in over 450,000 mostly preventable deaths annually. The Health Ministry identified dust, smoke, and air pollution as major triggers and advised proper inhaler use, avoidance of triggers, and regular medical follow-ups.
As pollution and respiratory illnesses rise, World Asthma Day serves as a reminder that asthma is manageable with the right steps.
