In a significant move reflecting the robust ties between India and Mauritius, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar inaugurated the first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Mauritius on Wednesday. This milestone underscores the close cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the critical health sector.

EAM Jaishankar, during his two-day visit to Mauritius, engaged in extensive discussions with Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth. The talks covered various dimensions of the bilateral relationship, including development partnership, defense and maritime cooperation, economic and trade ties, and people-to-people connections.

“Delighted to inaugurate along with Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth the first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Mauritius,” EAM Jaishankar announced on social media platform X. He highlighted that this center fulfills a promise made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year. The Jan Aushadhi Kendra aims to supply cost-effective, Made-in-India medicines, enhancing public healthcare and well-being in Mauritius.

In addition to the Jan Aushadhi Kendra, EAM Jaishankar and Prime Minister Jugnauth virtually inaugurated 12 India-assisted community development projects and a Mediclinic in Grand Bois. These initiatives reflect the depth of the India-Mauritius partnership in various sectors.

During his visit, EAM Jaishankar also presented Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to the first two 7th-generation Mauritian citizens and handed over a royalty cheque for the sale of nautical charts, in line with the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on navigational chart sales.

“The visit of EAM underscores the importance India attaches to Mauritius as an important pillar of India’s Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy,” the foreign affairs ministry stated. This visit reaffirms the commitment of both countries to strengthening their multi-dimensional bilateral relationship and deepening their close people-to-people ties.

The launch of the Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Mauritius marks a new chapter in the health cooperation between India and Mauritius, aiming to provide affordable healthcare solutions and reinforce the enduring friendship between the two nations.
