Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, has inaugurated a series of new facilities at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong, Meghalaya. These include a Regional Cancer Centre, an Under-Graduate Medical College, a new building for the Nursing College, hostels, eight Modular Operation Theatres, a Virtual Autopsy facility, and a new Guest House. Additionally, the foundation stone for a 150-bed Critical Care Block was laid during the event. Shri Heaving Stone Kharpran, Member of Legislative Assembly, Meghalaya, and Prof. Nalin Mehta, Director of NEIGRIHMS, were also present.
Dr. Mandaviya emphasized that these new facilities at NEIGRIHMS will significantly enhance healthcare services for the people of the Northeast region. The Central Government is dedicated to improving healthcare infrastructure in this area, with a focus on providing high-quality services.
Furthermore, Dr. Mandaviya noted that these additions will help attract and retain medical professionals in the Northeast, and commended the work culture and cleanliness at NEIGRIHMS. He reiterated the government’s commitment to further developing the institute’s infrastructure to maintain its status as a prominent hub for medical treatment, research, and training in the Northeast.
Dr. Mandaviya highlighted the holistic approach of the Union Government towards the health sector, emphasizing not only the creation of advanced medical infrastructure but also an increase in the number of medical colleges, Health and Wellness Centres, and the establishment of Critical Care units across districts.
Prof. Nalin Mehta added that the new facilities will significantly enhance healthcare provisions at NEIGRIHMS, leading to an increase in seats for MBBS and B.Sc. Nursing courses in Meghalaya. He expressed confidence that improved medical facilities will reduce the necessity for residents to seek treatment in other regions of the country.
The new facilities include a state-of-the-art 252-bed Regional Cancer Centre, an Under-Graduate Medical College equipped with advanced technologies for 100 MBBS students annually, and a Nursing College to address the rising demand for nursing professionals in the Northeast. The hostels offer accommodation for MBBS students and interns, totaling 416 rooms. The Modular Operation Theatre is a cutting-edge facility for complex surgeries, and the new Guest House features 28 rooms for NEIGRIHMS guests and visitors.
A significant addition is the virtual autopsy facility, a highly advanced and sophisticated technology available at only a few centers nationwide. This non-invasive post-mortem examination utilizes medical imaging to create a 3D model of the body for forensic pathologists and other medical professionals.
A 150-bed standalone Critical Care Block is also under construction, focused on treating highly contagious infectious diseases like COVID-19. This initiative ensures that regular hospital care remains uninterrupted during outbreaks.
These inaugurated facilities and the foundation stone for the Critical Care Block represent substantial progress in the government’s ongoing efforts to provide high-quality healthcare to the people of Meghalaya and the wider North East region.
