New Delhi, June 25, 2025 — In a landmark judgment, the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has held Dr Lal Pathlabs liable for deficient service after an erroneous laboratory report led to the unnecessary emergency hospitalisation of a patient. The commission directed the prominent diagnostic chain to pay Rs 3.5 lakh as compensation to the affected individual.

The case stemmed from a lab report issued by Dr Lal Pathlabs that showed the patient’s urea levels at more than ten times the normal range, falsely indicating a life-threatening condition. This alarming result prompted immediate hospitalisation and caused significant distress to the patient and their family. Subsequent tests conducted at three other laboratories—Max Health Care, Dr Dangs Laboratory, and Super Religare Laboratories Ltd—revealed all health parameters were within normal limits, contradicting the initial report.

The commission, presided over by Sangita Dhingra Sehgal and judicial member Pinki, dismissed the lab’s defense that the abnormal results were due to medication consumed by the patient. The panel found it implausible that any drug could cause such a dramatic discrepancy in test results. The commission also rejected arguments that the patient was obligated to provide a new sample or that the responsibility lay with the prescribing physician.

In its order dated May 26, the commission stated, “When a patient’s urea levels are reported at more than ten times the normal range, triggering emergency hospitalisation and profound distress, the laboratory cannot retreat behind semantic arguments about its limited role in the diagnostic chain.” The panel further noted that erroneous lab reports can lead to incorrect diagnoses, improper treatment, and even fatal outcomes if not addressed promptly.

The discharge summary from Max Hospital explicitly linked the patient’s admission to the erroneous lab report, strengthening the case for compensation. The commission concluded that the patient suffered not only financial loss but also severe psychological trauma and physical suffering as a result of the misdiagnosis and unnecessary hospitalisation.

The direction for compensation was deemed “just and reasonable,” with the commission concurring that Dr Lal Pathlabs failed to maintain the standard of reasonable care expected in pathological testing, amounting to a deficiency in service.
